When one begins to drink alcohol for the first time in one’s life, there are some common tendencies in which we tend to engage. Perfectly acceptable beer means a 24-pack of Pabst Blue Ribbon paid with quarters and singles, and one’s idea of “drinking whisky” means mixing something akin to an overly generous pour of Old Grand-Dad combined with some stale Coke
. As our taste buds and overall sense of maturity heightens, however, we realize we’ve been missing out an entire art form. The Southgate House Revival’s Rye Whiskey Tasting is a fine way to introduce you to tumblers instead of red Solo cups, and whet your palette with the staff’s well-rounded selection of six rye whiskeys, including Bulleit Rye, Knob Creek Rye, Rye One, Rittenhouse Rye, Wild Turkey Rye and Whistle Pig Rye. Designated driver not included. 21 and up. $15. 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 10. Southgate House Revival, 111 E. Sixth St., Newport. 859-431-2201, southgatehouse.com.
