Michel Onfray -- Atheist Manifesto: The Case Against Christianity, Judaism and Islam

Firmly grounded in the post 9/11-era search for answers and in a certain degree of pomposity, Atheist Manifesto is as much an attempt to argue that religious extremism could be the death of us all as it is a sermon to the choir of the faithless.

There's a lot to like and dislike about this book, but let's get things started by admitting that it's well written, its arguments reasoned and that it's sure to be a conversation starter. Author Michel Onfray argues that a fanatical repression of science and freedom is hardwired into the DNA of Christianity, Judaism and Islam. Throughout the book, Onfray offers up his analysis of why people crave religion and how the big three monotheistic religions cornered the spiritual markets. He leaves no doubt that he views it as a transaction between charlatans and dupes. Onfray provides the reader with solid historical support for his "case against religion" and his sections covering the rise of Christianity deliver a playbook for educated atheists attempting to outmaneuver their god-fearing counterparts. That's really the point of the book. Onfray believes that fanatics are increasingly in the driver's seats of these religions and that we as a species must choose between reason and religious madness or face self-destruction. If fire and brimstone atheists ever start holding revivals, this is the book they'll be thumping with their fists. But, like a tent revival, if you're not really fired up about Onfray's agenda, his The Atheist Manifesto might hold little interest for you. (Stephen Carter-Novotni) Grade: C
