If Ben Chasny had his way, he wouldn't be trapped here on Earth but rather levitating somewhere far above it. Over the 14-year span of releases from Six Organs of Admittance, Chasny's pet project fleshed out by a rotating cast of players, he's made his love for the heavens perfectly clear.

On 2011's Asleep on the Floodplain, tracks titled “Above A Desert I've Never Seen” and “Dawn, Running Home” evoked expansive spaces and sky-high perspectives. Last August's Ascent (note its name) houses “Close to the Sky,” “Solar Ascent” and “Visions (From Io).” (Context for that last reference: “Io” is the moniker of both a priestess in Greek mythology and one of Jupiter's four moons.)

Six Organs' Prog Rock-leaning titles aren't the only things that position Chasny as an astronaut-in-waiting.

The formerly San Francisco- and now Holyoke, Mass.-based frontman creates Psychedelic and Folk Rock steeped in serious mystical and meditative qualities. Ascent's guitar-heavy music — with acoustic and electric fretwork largely supplied by Chasny's former bandmates in the defunct and similarly Psych-friendly Comets on Fire — feels bigger than human life and even time itself.

In the grand scheme of things, Six Organs represents Chasny happily and slothfully shuffling toward the light. He will get there when he gets there, and that's fine. More loitering just means more melodies to unravel.

SIX ORGANS OF ADMITTANCE performs Thursday, Dec. 6 with Blues Control at MOTR Pub in Over-the-Rhine. Check out performance times and get venue details here.
