Seattle saxophonist Sherik is a cult icon in progressive Jazz circles, founding groups like Critters Buggin and Garage a Trois (with Charlie Hunter) and claiming membership in Primus singer/bassist Les Claypool’s Frog Brigade and Fancy Band, as well as the Peter Buck project Tuatara. For his latest group, Bandalabra, Sherik teamed up with Seattle musicians Dvonne Lewis (drums), Evan Flory-Barnes (bass) and Andy Coe (guitar) for an exploration into experimental music and AfroPop.

Or, as Sherik puts it, it’s “Fela Kuti meeting Steve Reich in Rock’s backyard.” The group’s trippy yet danceable music was captured on Live at the Royal Room, recorded at Bandalabra’s very first live show. The group pulls into Stanley’s Pub (323 Stanley Ave., Columbia-Tusculum, 513-871-6249) this Friday for a unique 9 p.m. show based on rockin’ grooves and dizzying improv.
