Terence Davies (screenwriter and director of The House of Mirth) once again takes on dual roles with this adaptation of Terence Rattigan’s play about the self-destructive love affair between the wife (Academy Award winner Rachel Weisz) of a British judge (Simon Russell Beale) and a pilot (Tom Hiddleston) in the Royal Air Force.
Set in the early 1950s, the play and film takes its title from the wife’s predicament — caught between the Devil and the deep blue sea — and audiences should expect Weisz to capture the romantic drama of this conflict between desire and stability, in what is likely to be a one-woman tour de force. Now at Kenwood Theatre. (R) Not screened for review
