Alex Kava’s road to best-selling mystery novelist was an unconventional one. A native of tiny Silver Creek, Neb., Kava studied art and English in college before entering a successful career in marketing and advertising. Yet something was missing. A lifelong lover of books and stories, Kava in 1996 decided to leave her lucrative PR firm gig and embark on a writing career.

Sixteen years later she is publishing her 10th mystery novel, Fireproof, which again centers on FBI profiler Maggie O’Dell, who is investigating an arsonist and a murderer who might be the same person. Kava’s O’Dell series has sold more than 3 million copies, a figure that makes sense given the author’s deftness with plot and clarity of language. Kava discusses Fireproof 7 p.m. Thursday, July 26 at Joseph-Beth Booksellers (2692 Madison Road, Rookwood Commons, Norwood). 513-396-8960.
