If you’re not acquainted with George M. Cohan, you should be. Right after Independence Day (and during the incredible festival of song all around us in Cincinnati during the World Choir Games) is the perfect moment. Cohan, after all, was a self-described “Yankee Doodle Dandy” who cranked out more than 500 songs.

If you know several patriotic tunes, I bet a majority of them are by Cohan. Here are two, for starters: “Over There” and “You’re a Grand Old Flag.” He was a big man in the theater too, having written “Give My Regards to Broadway” — the reason why a statue of him presides over New York City’s Times Square. He died in 1942, but his melodies linger on, celebrated in the jaunty musical George M! about his life. It’s on board the Showboat Majestic through July 29. $17-$18. 513-241-6550.
