Andre Dubus III opens his acclaimed 2011 memoir, Townie, with a quote from Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run”: “And the boys try to look so hard…” It’s a succinct way to sum up what follows, which is a powerful, often harrowing look at Dubus’ relationship with his famous father (revered short fiction writer Andre Dubus) and the turmoil his family endured when his parents’ marriage disintegrated in the 1970s.

The divorce left young Andre to help care for his siblings in a gritty New England town known for drugs and violence. Andre took up weight lifting to keep his rough surroundings at bay, which led to an immersion in physical altercations that only dissipated when he became a writer himself (Dubus III wrote House of Sand and Fog, which was a National Book Award finalist and later, a film).

ANDRE DUBUS III discusses his memoir 2 p.m. Saturday at Joseph-Beth Booksellers. 513-396-8960.
