Comedian Auggie Smith used to follow current events, but has kind of lost his stomach for them recently. “I can’t watch any politics anymore without getting angry,” he says. “I think it’s better for my blood pressure if I remain divinely and beautifully naïve of all that’s going on around me.” And he advises others to do the same. “No matter how angry you get, no matter how much you pay attention, it’s not going to change and it’s only going to get worse and worse.” Once a good chunk of his act, the current events have given way to more personal musings.
“I got married a few weeks back,” he reports. “It’s an odd thing to get married at 41 having never been married.” He feels good about it, though.
“Now I’m going to be really funny, because we all know how funny married comedians’ material is.” Still, in this day and age with social media and the internet as a whole, Smith feels he has to bring his “A” game. “In the old days if something happened in the news, I only had to come up with a funnier joke than people heard that day at work. Now with Twitter and Facebook, I have to come up with a funnier joke than everyone else in the world.” Auggie Smith performs at Go Bananas Thursday-Sunday.
