When today’s stand-up comics list historical comedic influences, George Carlin and Richard Pryor are probably the most often mentioned of their generation. For some reason, people tend to forget about folks like David Brenner, Robert Klein and Lily Tomlin. The latter is currently on tour and will bring her well-honed comedy to the Taft Theatre Saturday. Tomlin first came to the attention of American comedy fans through her work on the TV series Laugh-In.

In 1971 she released an album titled This is a Recording, an LP of sketches involving her highly popular Ernestine the operator character. It won a Grammy and remains the highest-charting album by a comedienne. She went on to host Saturday Night Live and appear in dozens of successful films including 9 to 5 and Nashville. One of her most acclaimed films was All of Me opposite Steve Martin. In addition to her Grammy award she has won several Emmy and Tony awards and has been nominated for an Academy Award. With such an impressive resume of stage, TV and movie work, it’s easy to see why some people might forget that she is also one of America’s top stand-up comedians. Tomlin performs 8 p.m. Saturday at the Taft Theatre Downtown.
