Carriers at the Park National Bank Gallery in Batavia is an astute comment on the flux of daily life. In a series of polished 48-by-40-inch collages, artist Jonathan Gibson positions figurative references beneath a torrent of corporate detritus. Vestiges of logos, slogans and brand names are cut, pasted and intermingled with glimpses of arms and legs; implying the close relationship between our sense of self and that which we consume.
Throughout the works in the show Gibson displays a preference for the precise lines and taut geometries that evolve out of the demands of digital manipulation, and single hues typically dominate each picture. Though the approach keeps a sense of humanity at a distance, works like the electrifying “Carrier #1” (2007) and the luminous “Carrier #9” (2010) have a sensuality all their own. An exhibition that emphasizes meticulous construction and intricate subject matter, Jonathan Gibson’s Carriers is not to be missed. The Park National Bank Art Gallery is located in the Snyder building on the UC Clermont College campus. Gallery Hours are 7:30 a.m.–7 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 7:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday and 8:30 a.m.–noon Saturday. Through Oct. 28.
