Music: Balance and Composure

By Mike Breen · August 30th, 2011 · CityBeat Recommends

The number of young Rock bands wearing ’90s influences on their sleeves is increasing seemingly with every day we move beyond that pivotal decade in “Alternative” Rock music history. And the influence reflects various elements of the era in varying ways, from the Grunge regression of Yuck to the Pixies-Pop dynamics of Surfer Blood. One of the best to emerge of late is Balance and Composure, a suburban Philly-based group that takes a ground-floor built on the best bits from those early ’90s Pre-Indie (Prindie?) bands, then expands and elevates into the clouds with evocative Mogwai-like soundscapes, urgent, pre-Emo (Premo?) melodicism and a Punk spirit.

B&C’s debut full-length, Separation, was met with glowing reviews upon its release in May on No Sleep Records. The band plays The Mad Hatter (620 Scott Blvd., Covington) this Tuesday for an all-ages show featuring Polar Bear Club, Fireworks and Make Do and Mend. Tickets are $12 and showtime is 6 pm.
