“For 20 years I’ve wanted to do comedy,” says comedian Brian Knab. “I don’t even remember what prompted me to send an email to Go Bananas back in the winter.” That whim landed the 38-year-old a spot on Pro Am night at the club. It was his first performance since his high school talent show in 1991. “I did it, and it went really well,” he says. The next step in burgeoning new career was to enter the Funniest Person in Cincinnati contest, which he wound up winning. A systems analyst by day, Knab has mostly had to keep his funny in check. “I’m always being told, ‘There is a time and a place.’ ” The time appears to be now, and the place is various stages in Cincinnati.
As the winner of the Funniest Person in Cincinnati contest, Knab will get a slot at this weekend’s Cincinnati Brew Ha Ha comedy festival, and will MC a show at Go Bananas Sept. 22-25, when Mike Lukas headlines the club. From there, Knab would like to expand his reach. “I’d really like to find someone who can point me in the right direction about sending stuff out to clubs and bookers,” he says. “I’d love to tour, but the one thing holding me back is I have family and career I really enjoy. It takes a big leap of faith. There are a lot of hungry comics out there, six of them living in an apartment together.” Local comedy fans so far are chanting “Jump! Jump!” Knab performs at Cincinnati Brew Ha Ha at 5:55 p.m. Friday (Stage 3) and 4:55 p.m. Saturday (Stage 2). Brew Ha Ha features 50 comedians, including Bert Kreischer and Caroline Rhea, and 100 beers to sample. The comedy is free, beer wristbands are $5 and samples are $1 each. Check it all out from 5 p.m.-midnight Friday and 4 p.m.-midnight Saturday at Sawyer Point, Downtown
