Six years ago, Mary Beth King began
living a vegan lifestyle and thought she would probably never eat
dessert again. But since she’s resourceful and loves to bake, she
learned to craft delicious vegan baked goods and desserts. In 2009, she
took a giant step and started Sweet Peace Bakery,
(www.sweetpeacebakery.com), while still working at her day job for
Sweet Peace Bakery doesn’t yet have a
store front, but Mary Beth’s tempting desserts can now be found at
specialty stores and coffee houses around the city, including Coffee
Emporium, Sidewinder’s, Park & Vine and Sitwell’s.

Second Sunday on Main or City Flea. In addition, she’ll create
special-order cakes and desserts for birthdays and other occasions.
They’re not only vegan but also great if someone has wheat or egg
allergies. Even carnivores go out of their way to get her goodies.
Personally, I love her Butterfinger Bars and Coffee Cake Muffins.
CityBeat: What is the last great meal you ate and where did you eat it?
Mary Beth King: I live in Northside and
love the vegan options. Melt is fantastic and I eat there all the time,
but I really love the vegan pizza at NorthSlice. I just love the crust
and it’s the best vegan pizza in the city.
CB: What does it mean to you to be a vegan?
MBK: I do a lot of yoga and I practice
what is called Ahimsa, which means, “Doing the least amount of harm.”
As a vegan I believe that I am doing as little harm as possible to the
earth, to other beings and to my body.
