Hot Summer Eats: Outdoor Dining

By Staff · June 15th, 2011 · Special
The good thing about being near a giant river during the summer is not the opportunity to go swimming — too dangerous, plus swimming pools are cleaner. What the Mighty Ohio will offer all summer long, however, is ample opportunity to dine riverside. The following are three options among Cincinnati’s many restaurants offering outside dining with tremendous views.

• Cabana on the River (7445 Forbes Road, Saylor Park) brings the tropics to the West Side. From its huge deck with live entertainment on weekends to the neon palm trees, everything about this riverfront bar speaks of summer. There are plenty of specialty drinks to put you in the mood and lots of great food to keep you partying there all day. The menu at Cabana on the River is way more than traditional bar food. The ambitious menu features items such as Baked Spicy Cabana Bread ($8.95) or Louie’s Smoked Fish Dip ($8.95) for appetizers.

There are plenty of big salads, sandwiches, burgers and entrées like Ahi Tuna ($11.95) or Grilled Filet Kabobs ($13.95). The prices are a bit higher than your typical West Side restaurant, but with the river and the great atmosphere you’re on vacation, right? So go ahead and splurge. (Bill Hatfield)

• If you have ever had an urge to play a pick-up game of sand volleyball and then enjoy a burger while relaxing on a deck overlooking the Ohio River, then The Sandbar (4609 Kellogg Ave., East End) has you covered. League volleyball, tournaments, a cabana bar right in the middle of the volleyball court, great burgers, beer and wings — they’re all for the taking at The Sandbar. Want some live music to go along with your dinner? The Sandbar can do that, too. You can also reserve any area (including the volleyball courts) for private parties. Open 11 a.m.-2:30 a.m. daily (kitchen closes at 11 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday and 10 p.m. Sunday and Monday). 513-533-3810, www.thesandbarcincinnati.com. (Candace Miller-Janidlo)

• If lounging by (or in) a bar-side deck pool at a marina on the Ohio River isn’t your cup of tea, steer clear of The Reef at Manhattan Harbour (1301 Fourth Ave., Dayton, Ky.). If, however, you’re looking for a place to sip a cocktail or a beer and have “the best damn burgers on the river,” The Reef is where you ought to be. Part of the Manhattan Harbour Marina, The Reef offers the aforementioned burgers, fish, hoagies, wraps and salads in a casual setting on the Kentucky side of the Ohio River. There’s a kids menu, too. 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Wednesday-Thursday and Sunday; 11 a.m.-2:30 a.m. Friday-Saturday (kitchen closes at 10 p.m.). (CMJ)
