Lady Parts, an art show at Southgate House opening Friday, initially conjures Newport's sordid past of nude dance clubs and prostitution rings. Really, though, it is an all-woman exhibition that looks into the inner life of femininity and how it fuels each artist's work. The content moves fluidly through different waves of Feminism and manifests in all sorts of media, hung salon style, as if to call to mind the art-friendly salons of Gertrude Stein and Alice B.
Toklas. Artists include Andi Martin, Andrea Bellen, Arynn Blazer, Didem Mert, Elise Thompson, Emily Lind, Jacklyn Howard, Kate Dube, Lauren Mira, Michelle Eikenbary Calis, Molly Donnemeyer, Monica Brewer, Sara Relojo, Tilley Stone and others. Relojo's work culls together images from the social, sexual and psychological aspects of a young woman’s psyche. Donnermeyer's concocts indulgent fantasies that give physical presence to the 'cult of the feminine' in her photographs. Elise Thompson's figurative paintings are moody partial scenes full of far off stares and grimaces. The opening reception is from 7-10 p.m., this Friday. It's free and open to the public. Exhibition continues through June 24. Southgate House is located at 24 East Third St., Newport.
