With the flood of shows announced for Riverbend and other outdoor arenas in the area, it feels like the full summer concert lineup has already been revealed. But there’s plenty more to come, including the lineups for the free, weekly MidPoint Indie Summer Series, which returns beginning June 3 with national and local bands playing on Fountain Square every Friday throughout the summer, leading up to the big MidPoint Music Festival Sept. 22-24. Three-day MPMF passes will be on sale at the Indie Summer shows at a special discounted rate (while they last).
For the series opener on June 3, lively local Electronica duo You You’re Awesome headlines, joined by Electro/Hip Hop duo Javelin and Kentucky’s Lydia Burrell, the Electronica alter-ego of My Morning Jacket pal Alexander Smith. On June 10, one of the biggest draws of last year’s Summer Series, Texas-based Chillwave faves Neon Indian, returns, joined by dynamic Brooklyn Indie Rock “one-man-band” Oberhoffer. Chicago Indie Folk/Rock foursome Maps & Atlases headline the June 17 show, while June 24 is headed up by NYC Dream Pop favorites Asobi Seksu as well as eclectic Detroit Indie band Prussia.
Local nationally renowned Indie Pop faves Pomegranates are the main act for July 1’s show. Things get blissfully weird for the July 8 concert featuring New Orleans’ flamboyant Big Freedia, the transvestite “Queen Diva” of Bounce, a genre that’s a wildly energized regional spin on Hip Hop adorned with N’awlins-informed accoutrements.
If you want to learn more about these acts, I've posted interesting facts and video clips for all of them on CityBeat's music blog.
The rest of the summer’s MidPoint Indie Summer Series lineup will be announced in the coming weeks.
Stay tuned to MidPoint's Facebook page for the latest updates.
Ohio Hip Hop Love
Ill Poetic — the multitasking Hip Hop artist who made his bones in the Cincinnati and Dayton scenes and writes a monthly words-of-wisdom column for CityBeat called Hip Hop (Un) Scene — plans to provide some dispatches from the road for CityBeat as he embarks on the J. Rawls-headlined “#Ohio Takeover Tour.” (Keep an eye on our music blog at citybeat.com for the reports.)
The tour (featuring all Ohio acts) is an early promotional push for The Hip Hop Affect, the anticipated new release from Rawls, a renowned, Columbus-bred DJ/producer whose credits range from work on the first Black Star album to projects with Madlib and The Beastie Boys. Recently, Rawls leaked the new track “We’re on Top (#ohiotakeover),” a “posse cut” featuring 23 MCs from the Buckeye State. As if the free track wasn’t enough, Rawls also gifted the world an Ohio-heavy mixtape showcasing the artists on “We’re on Top” and many others, including Illogic (the veteran Columbus MC who is also on the Takeover tour), Basic Element, Fly Union and Columbus’ L.e For The Uncool, which rounds out the Takeover tour bill’s core acts.
The Takeover comes to Cincinnati Friday, invading The Drinkery, the old Jefferson Hall space on Main Street in Over-the-Rhine. Joining Rawls, Ill Poetic, Illogic and L.e. For the Uncool will be several locals guests, including Eclipse, Moxy Monster, Gold Shoes and Da 3rd Element.
