It’s time to get funky. David Dorfman Dance brings da noise and da funk to the Aronoff Center this weekend with Prophets of Funk — Dance to the Music. In this evening-length work, Dorfman’s energetic ensemble keeps alive the gospel of humanity, theatricality and good ol’ soul. Presented as the latest installment of Contemporary Dance Theater’s Guest Arts Series, this romp — fittingly set to old-school songs from Sly and the Family Stone — promises to shine in ways that are accessible to audiences without sidestepping substance and creative rigor.

Touring internationally, Dorfman and his ensemble manage to deliver both street cred and academic accolades. Dorfman, whose work with his company now spans more than two decades, is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship and a longtime faculty member of the American Dance Festival. Take advantage of this chance to catch the fusion of contemporary dance with a flashback to funkiness up close and personal in the intimate space of the Jarson-Kaplan Theater Friday and Saturday. Prophets of Funk sounds like a celebration for dance aficionados and party people alike.
