“I wanted to be a stand-up comic since I was 10 years old,” says Shane Mauss. “I think even younger than that, 8 or 9, I forget what I usually tell people. I should get my story straight one of these days.” It’s a long way from La Crosse, Wis. to the comedy clubs of New York though, but Mauss kept feeling that urge, even if he wasn’t quite sure how to get started. While saving money, and working up the nerve, a friend announced he was moving to Boston.
Mauss followed, and eventually took the plunge there. An appearance at the Aspen Comedy Festival two years later, where he was a last minute addition, gained him all sorts of industry attention.
“Suddenly I was a full-time comic,” he says. “My trajectory went from being borderline homeless to doing all these TV spots.” That has included everything from The Conan O’Brien Show to Playboy After Dark. The latter was an odd one to be sure.“The guys in the audience are there to see naked women, not me tell jokes,” he laughs. “I begged them to send me a tape of it, but they never did.” Shane Mauss performs at Go Bananas in the Festival Market Place, Montgomery, Thursday-Sunday. Tickets are $8-$12.
