It’s going to be a happy new year for comedian Andi Smith. The Wisconsin native will feature for fellow comic Chad Daniels this week at Go Bananas, a gig she’s excited about. Daniels hand-picked his feature act. “He asked me to do it and I was like, ‘Yeah, no problem, that will be really fun,’ ” Smith says. Now living in St. Louis, Smith kind of backed in to stand-up comedy. A creative director for an advertising agency out of college, she found herself working until 10 at night while her colleagues, married with children, left at 6.
Looking for something to get her out of work at a reasonable hour, she decided to go watch open-mic comedy.
“I wasn’t going to actually perform,” she explains. “I was going to go and watch other people publicly fail. I thought that would be fun.” The club’s doorman noticed that she was a frequent patron and asked if she wanted to go up and tell jokes. As it turned out, he was hitting on her, but she went up anyway and did pretty well. Ten years on, she has a unique voice and is quite hilarious. She owes her style to her upper-Midwest upbringing. “A lot of it is just my personality,” she says. “I tend to be sarcastic. My whole family is really sarcastic. I’m from Wisconsin, where people tend to be blunter.” Smith performs with Daniels Thursday-Sunday at Go Bananas in Montgomery. 513-984-9288.
