Despite his bespectacled appearance, comedian Kyle Grooms is not a geek. “Nah, not at all,” he says, laughing. “I do stuff about how people perceive me and how I perceive myself. Because I wear glasses people automatically assume I’m going to be a little bit nerdy. Just wearing glasses and growing up in the hood with a name like Kyle, you know?”
Grooms is not an impressionist, though he does do a spot-on Barack Obama that audiences really enjoy.
It’s not very political, though. “News gets old fast,” he says. “If you talk about Tiger Woods today people are like, ‘That’s old news!’ You have to keep it relevant.” Before going into stand-up, Grooms worked at a television station in Miami and he hopes to merge that experience with his comedy. He keeps his TV skills current by writing and directing commercials. “Stand-up is great and it’s my love, but you’ve got to make money other ways,” Grooms says. “It’s like being in the mob. You’ve got to find all these other ways to make money.”
Grooms performs Thursday-Sunday at Go Bananas in Montgomery. Go here for show times, tickets and venue details.
