Every year as we approach the season of holiday shopping, more and more Cincinnatians are rethinking corporate consumerism and focusing instead on buying local and handmade to support artists and artisans and also enrich the lives of gift recipients receiving original artwork and other lovingly produced objects. But 1305 Gallery (1305 Main St., Over-the-Rhine) has been encouraging this alternative to Black Friday for years now, with the stalwart “Yuletide” marketplace that Lily Mulberry sets up in her gallery.
This year the project is featuring numerous individual artists and also collectives, like the Shiny Brites and Cincy Craft Cartel. These groups of artists provide a platform for original handcrafted products. I never leave Yuletide without marking a couple of gifts off my list, all carefully and tastefully wrapped.
The marketplace opens at 9 a.m. Friday with extended hours throughout December (11 a.m-7 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday and noon-5 p.m. Sunday). Visits Mondays and during non-regular hours can be arranged by appointment.
