From downtown Cincinnati, take Columbia Parkway/US-50 east. After following this road for ten miles, you will go through the town of Mariemont. Just past Mariemont, where the road is no longer divided by a grassy median, turn left onto Walton Creek Road. You cannot miss the theater; it is the creepy-looking building directly in front of you at the first fork in the road. There is a sign out front advertising the Mariemont Players.
Several tribes of Native Americans lived on the land here. Mound-builders such as the Hopewells occupied the area for many years. More recently, the Shawnee hunted and fished in the area of the Walton Creek Theater and the adjacent river.
The original building here was a school, which was built in 1869. It was rebuilt in 1910 and continued to be a school for several decades. In 1958, a theater troupe known as the Mariemont Players purchased the building as a permanent theater for only $13,000.
Since 1958, the building has undergone numerous renovations and redesigns, but it still houses the Mariemont Players.
The ghost here seems to be quite angry with those who enter the building.
Other people have reported feeling uncomfortable inside the theater, as if there is a presence that doesn’t want them to be there. Most often, these whispers and feelings of discomfort are experienced in the basement of the building.
People also claim to see actual apparitions throughout the theater. Many of these apparitions will be those of Native Americans, although sometimes people will see small children dressed in nineteenth century clothing—perhaps ghosts of those children who once used this building as a school. These apparitions always vanish when they are approached.
You will need to purchase tickets to a show in order to gain access to the building. When there is a show playing at the theater, it is open Thursday through Sunday. On Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, the show opens at eight o’clock, and on Sunday it opens at seven. Tickets are seventeen dollars. Since everyone in the building is constantly busy setting up for the next show, they do not have time to take people through the building in off hours to look for ghosts, so your best chance of encountering one of these spirits is to actually purchase tickets and explore while you are waiting for your show to begin.
