Visually, Mynt is somewhat of a spectacle, with bright green fabrics and neon lights standing out against dark wood and lounge-y dimness.
On a recent Monday, my girlfriend and I met a couple friends and sat at a table on Mynt’s patio. We sat perusing the menu while the two waitresses working that night basically ignored us and straightened up the patio furniture for a long time. We finally flagged one of them down and notified her of our existence. She got our waitress to come over. I knew we were in for a classic scenario of a slow restaurant night yielding slower-than-typical service. This is a phenomenon that I understand and mostly accept. You’re asking for it if you eat out on a Monday night, but at a place that puts a $100 drink (Gran Patron Martini) on its menu, I’d expect better service than what we received.
We ordered drinks — four Hendrick’s and tonic with cucumber ($9) — to the confusion of our server. After pointing out that Hendrick’s gin is used in their Cucumber Gimlet ($12), we were in good shape. Our drinks took a while to arrive, but they were well prepared and tasty.
The food menu is divided into four sections: Tapas, Green, Warm and Sweet. Our vegan friend noted that it is not very vegetarian- or vegan-friendly. In fact, most of the salads under the Green heading would have even a carnivore salivating
I tried the Mediterranean Fish Taco ($9.50) — smoked salmon, Greek yogurt, sundried tomatoes, jalapeno, red onion, cucumber, romaine, cumin, olive oil and olives — from the Warm menu. You’ll be glad to know that the smoked salmon isn’t actually served warm. It isn’t a taco, per se; it is served with the ingredients folded inside of soft flatbread. It was a decent sized portion and pretty good. It’s not as easily shared as some of the other options, if that’s what you’re going for.
My girlfriend ordered the Mesquite Chicken Quesadilla Rolls ($5), which were basically little fried tortillas wrapped around chicken, Monterey Jack cheese and jalapenos with a Southwest Ranch dipping sauce. We both enjoyed their smoky, sweet and spicy flavor. The Ranch was very good, too, but we couldn’t pinpoint what it was that made it so Southwest-y.
Our friends ordered the Baked Soft Pretzels ($9) and the Jalapeno & Mango Dip ($7). The pretzels were pretty standard, but good. They are served with three dipping options to keep them from being too boring. Everyone loved the cinnamon butter. The cheese sauce and whole grain honey Dijon mustard weren’t bad either.
So far, everything we’d had was pretty decent but nothing to write home about, so to speak. But the one thing I loved, and that I’d return for, was the Jalapeno & Mango Dip. Served with white corn chips, the dip had jalapenos, mango, garlic and mint cream cheese. It should really be called “mint cream cheese dip with jalapenos and mango” because most of the flavor comes from the mint and cream cheese, which explains why I liked it so much. But you can taste the mango and jalapeno, which makes it that much better.
Except the Fish Tacos, everything we ordered was from the Tapas menu. The Warm menu has other sandwiches, including the Mynt Mediterranean Reuben ($7), with corned beef, black olives, feta cheese and Thousand Island dressing, as well as Roast Beef Sliders ($8).
We were already there for a lot longer than we expected and it started raining, so we decided to forgo dessert. Plus, I never got an answer on what “white chocolate cheese” was. It sounds gross, but I bet it’s delicious. The Creamsicle Cheesecake ($8) consists of said white chocolate cheese, orange cheesecake and orange curd. So I bet it’s good.
Aside from the bad service and rain, our experience at Mynt wasn’t all that bad. The food was pretty tasty and eating on the square is always a good time. It’ll be difficult not to stop by Mynt again for that Jalapeno & Mango Dip and some of the best people-watching in the city.
