There’s an inherent logistical problem when it takes almost 10 years for a studio to develop a sequel to a kid’s movie featuring live-action talking animals — the obviously young audience that initially flocked to theaters with parents in tow are now teenagers who are probably unlikely to be caught dead anywhere near such silly and childish fare when they could be engaged in the age-old struggle between cold and oh-so-cool vampires.
So what were the makers of the follow-up to Cats & Dogs to do? Well, they brought in the weirdest collection of vocal talent they could find: the oddly bland James Marsden as the rookie canine hero Diggs, the indistinct Christina Applegate as kitty partner Catherine and the over-the-top stylings of the aptly named comedian Katt Williams as a dim-bulb pigeon to battle such foes as Bette Midler’s Kitty Galore and Sean Hayes’ Mr
And that’s exactly how the idea comes across, as a broken mash-up of adult spy and serial killer tropes dumbed down for kids who are too young to appreciate the humor and too inane for everyone else, which just means that Revenge is stupid. Grade: F
