Many in Cincinnati probably don’t realize the number of multi-taskers in our corner of the art world that keep things interesting. One such local hero is Bill Ross, who opens Paradise, a survey exhibition at 1305 Gallery on this Final Friday. In Ross’ confectionary paintings, animals play out enigmatic or even twisted dramas. Often cute and cuddly, Ross’ creatures seem capable of veering into the demented and dangerous.

His scenarios are often set into raucously hued twilights with brightly colored patterns falling away into suspenseful shadow play.

Ross co-founded Visionaries and Voices with Keith Banner, and last year they founded Thunder-Sky Inc. Both organizations offer a platform to artists from diverse backgrounds who may otherwise lack opportunity. The relationships with these artists come into Ross’ own work. Many of his paintings have been created collaboratively with artists diagnosed with developmental disabilities. The stories in the paintings are often suggestive of interpersonal struggle, so it is befitting that this interest would find its way into the production of the work as well. The exhibit runs through Aug. 21.
