In Bruce Riley’s new exhibition of paintings at Miller Gallery, Organic Figuration, layers of watermedia and resin compress whole worlds into deep, churning events. Drips, pours, sprays and stains of pigment and medium coalesce into utterly organic forms as if blown in from a freak storm or plucked from Riley’s garden just outside his studio window in Chicago.

Variously organic, patterned (that sometimes condense in ornamental designs) and loosely figurative, Riley’s paintings play jewel tones against one another into luminous, vivifying complexities. The figures suggested are loosely formed from stacks of polka dotted or veined mixtures of paint, looking explosive, dangerously beautiful, and as if they could collapse into shivering light.

Bruce Riley's opening reception is 6-8 p.m. June 11, and the show continues through June 25. Miller Gallery is located at 2715 Erie Ave., Hyde Park.
