Art: Sentimental Journey at Country Club

By Steve Rosen · May 11th, 2010 · CityBeat Recommends

Gary Lee Boas has become one of the country's more unusual collectible contemporary photographers since the 2000 publication of his book Starstruck: Photographs from a Fan. Beginning in his teenage years, he started taking snapshots with a simple Brownie camera of celebrities during New York's decadent 1970s, a time when Warhol, Liza, Michael Jackson, Bianca Jagger, Cher and all the other beautiful people were easy to find coming and going from Studio 54.

Neither high-fashion nor surreptitious, his photos have a raw, pop, in-your-face directness that — in this age of controlled security-cautious access to the famous — makes them seem from a far more distant past than the 1970s.

Country Club gallery is opening Gary Lee Boas: Sentimental Journey with a 7-9 p.m. Friday reception. It will be up through July 3.
