Some details about the 2010 MidPoint Music Festival were unveiled April 23 at the Contemporary Arts Center, where Indie bands Aloha and Pomegranates performed at the MPMF10 "Reveal Showcase." Several artists already booked for the big September fest were announced, as were some of the bigger acts lined up for the free summer-long MidPoint Indie Summer shows every Friday on Fountain Square.
While the full lineup will be announced soon, these out-of-town artists have been confirmed for the Indie Summer series: Camera Obscura (June 4), Neon Indian (June 11), Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit (June 18), Smoking Popes (June 25), Why? (July 9) and Dawes (Aug. 6). Check Fountain Square's web site for updates on the lineup and other details.
Artists confirmed for MidPoint 2010 so far come from all over North America and include A Place to Bury Strangers, Richard Buckner, Gringo Star, Plus/Minus, Cults, Caribou, Via Tania, Gaby Moreno, Milktooth and Sam Lamont.
An interesting, last-minute addition to last night's announcement was that Van Dyke Parks (pictured) — along with sometimes-tour-partners Clare and the Reasons, which features the daughter of VDP's pal Geoff Muldaur — will appear at this year's MidPoint. Parks has an extensive solo discography (and has scored numerous films and TV shows) but is best known for his sometimes-legendary collaborations, including his work with Brian Wilson on the famously shelved yet still widely beloved and influential Smile album (Parks helped Wilson finally complete the project a few years back). Parks has also worked with everyone from Tim Buckley, Randy Newman and The Byrds to U2, Joanna Newsom and Scissor Sisters in his storied career. The full MPMF lineup will be announced in June.
Discounted three-day MidPoint passes go on sale June 4 at the first Indie Summer show. Three-day pass-holders will have access to "The Secret Show," this year being presented with help from Secret Cincinnati.
