Kim Maurer, owner of Sidewinder coffee shop in Northside and co-owner of the recently opened Mayday, has a lot on her plate … so to speak. But as frequenters of her hangouts can tell, she’s not too busy to have a good time.
She can often be found at either business, slingin’ drinks or tipping one back herself. Mayday has been serving their version of gourmet street food in the form of hot dogs. We caught up with Kim by phone during her recent trip to Chicago, where she sampled their hot dogs and concluded, “Ours are better.”
CityBeat: What was the last great meal you ate and where did you have it?
Kim Maurer: The last great meal I ate honestly was Thanksgiving cooked by my family … but I am sure that is not the response you are looking for.
I don’t even know the name of the place, but it’s in Mount Lookout Square and they do half-price sushi (Dancing Wasabi). I went there last week at midnight with a few friends and had super-awesome sushi. Even though it’s half price, they don’t short you on the portions and the service is always fast and top-notch. And anywhere you can get sushi and sake at midnight in this town is the best in my book.
CB: What was it that made your Thanksgiving meal a great one?
KM: Oh, well, I don’t know. It’s just the one time of year that my whole family gets together. A lot of them come in from New York and they cook this just giant meal and there’s like bacon fat in everything and it’s just really awesome. Cases of wine, whiskey, lots of talking … it’s good.
