Sunday brunch in Northside! From our friends at Melt, there’s a new brunch menu that’s vegetarian heaven. Sweet Potato Tempeh Hash, Bread Pudding French Toast, cage-free eggs and organic peas that were raised with respect. Really. Every Sunday 10 a.m.-3 p.m.
Oyster Festival at Washington Platform! It’s the 24th year for this shell-a-bration, through April 24. Have them shucked on the half shell, smoked, broiled or wrapped in bacon and fried. There are contests and prizes during the fest and new this year is a price special: the “3 for 22.” That’s three oyster appetizers for $22, available Monday-Thursday after 5 p.m.
Concert:Nova presents Vivaldi’s Four Seasons at 6 p.m. April 18 at the Midwest Culinary Institute at Cincinnati State and again 7 p.m. April 19 at Via Vite Restaurant on Fountain Square. It’s music followed by a meal and the menu will “tantalize both your ears and your tastebuds,” they say.
We could all use a little tantalizing, right? This actually sounds like a cool concert and a really good deal, as the post-concert dinners are being prepared by the Midwest Culinary Institute Team on Sunday and Chef Cristian Pietoso on Monday. Tickets are $50 in advance or $75 at the door.
Speaking of Via Vite, I learned something while eavesdropping at their bar recently. Five-Star Foodies is a local family-owned company that makes vegan food and sells it at Lucky John Market, the slow-food movement’s store near DeSales Corner in East Walnut Hills, as well as at Whole Foods and IGA. I’m usually not keen on manufactured food, but there’s definitely always a need for more convenient, healthy options. I’m willing to give their Artichoke Burgers a try, and I’d definitely go for the ginger apple cider. Yum.
Anxiously anticipated, too, is the opening of Taqueria Mercado in the space previously occupied by Javier’s on Walnut Street downtown near the YWCA and in Florence where Acapulco was in the Ramada Inn. I love the food at Taqueria Mercado so much that it was almost worth driving to Fairfield when my taco jones kicked in. Now I won’t have to. Si, that’s muy bueno. The downtown location is scheduled to be open every day 8 a.m.-11 p.m., but call 513-381-0678 to make sure or check back here. I’ll update you after I lick the salsa off my fingers.
Last but not least, there’s sushi at the ballpark, people! it’s not just any old sushi, either. It’s from Sake Bomb! In addition, Skyline introduced a “Walking 3-Way” on Opening Day, just in case a cheese coney wasn’t portable enough. This new invention looks a lot like a regular three-way except it’s in a paper cup and not on a plate. Just goes to show you that anything can happen in food news. Play ball!
