Comedy: Brent Weinbach

By PF Wilson · March 2nd, 2010 · CityBeat Recommends

Comedian Brent Weinbach sounds weary. “I just got back from India,” he explains. “I went for a wedding then I traveled around the country a little bit.” He didn’t perform there, though he has entertained folks in Japan. “Not comedy, but modern dance. Just kidding.” Actually, Weinbach is an accomplished pianist and will sometimes favor the crowd with a quirky original song, should some ivories be available. It’s not They Might Be Giants or Barenaked Ladies kind of funny.

“It’s funny in a more R. Kelly kind of way,” he says, “where the humor is more accidental.” He also notes that music is more of a serious artistic outlet as opposed to his comedy, which is about, as he describes it, “penises, poo and video games.” Quite a different set of subject matter compared to his previous job as a substitute teacher. Still, that job did help his stage presence. “It kind of trained me not to seem weak,” he laughs. “On stage I want to give the appearance that I’m strong, confident and strict. I don’t want any kind of monkey business.”

Brent Weinbach performs at Go Bananas Thursday through Sunday. Tickets are $8-$12. Get showtimes, tickets and find nearby bars and restaurants here.
