The Art Academy thinks big — partly by thinking small — with its two shows opening Friday: Gary Gaffney’s Everything I did on sabbatical … and less opens along with the 23rd Annual Minumental Exhibition. Sculptor Gaffney includes artwork along with “poetry, short stories and the beginnings of a libretto for a one-act opera.” His mixed-media sculptures are skinny wonders, from a series called “Many Worlds.” Learn more about them when Gaffney gives a gallery talk at 7 p.m.

Meanwhile, Minumental showcases works not exceeding 2 inches in any direction, most for sale, all by Academy students, faculty, staff and alumni who think small in strange and surprising ways. Unhampered by specific media requirements, these works run the gamut and include paintings, sculpture, collage, mixed-media pieces, photography, fiber arts and digital art. Current students are in the running for cash and cash-equivalent prizes, to be announced at Friday’s 7 p.m. awards ceremony.

The Gaffney opening is 5-9 p.m.; the Minumental opening is 5:30-8:30 p.m. Both shows run through March 12 and can be seen 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday-Friday and 9 a.m-5 p.m. on weekends. Get details here.

Minumentals is TOTAL RIP-OFF! Pieces by "name" artists were sold prior to the stated 5:30 opening at a time that they weren't even processing orders from the general public. Obviously Academy insiders were snagging the good deals. Don't bother advertising things to the public if you aren't going to treat people fairly.
