Comedy: Bill Squire

By PF Wilson · November 2nd, 2009 · CityBeat Recommends

You can be forgiven if, for a moment, you wondered if '80s-era rocker Billy Squier and comedian Bill Squire were actually one and the same. "A few months ago Billy Squier was playing a show with Styxs or some other equally terrific ‘70s/’80s era glam rockers," says the Cleveland-based funnyman. "Some of my parents’ friends thought that I was opening for them. I haven't had anyone show up to a gig thinking they were going to see Billy Squier doing stand-up, and if anyone ever has they haven't said anything." At the age of 19, Squire, embracing his Mormon faith, went on a mission to the Philippines.

He eventually soured on the strict rules, and after breaking several, was excommunicated and sent home. "(My parents) were super bummed," he says. "It meant a lot to them, and that's like a big dishonor. Luckily I was only sent home a week early so it wasn't quite as embarrassing to them. But, yeah, they probably still aren't over it completely." He still draws on that experience for his act, having recently developed a bit about Filipino funerals. "It is a difficult chunk of material," he notes, "because it is very dark, but hilarious."%u2028 Bill Squire performs at Go Bananas Thursday-Sunday. $8-$12.
