Over the Rhine

Sept. 11 • Moonlite Gardens

By Mike Breen · September 10th, 2009 · Sound Advice

Like fine wine, local legends Over the Rhine have gotten better with age. From their first show at Sudsy Malone’s (about 20 folks showed up to see it) to their various record deals (I.R.S. and Virgin/Backporch) and back to their DIY roots (which has given them some of their biggest successes yet), OtR is marking two decades of gorgeous, soulful music-making.

Founding members (and wife/husband team) Karin Bergquist and Linford Detweiler played a two-night retrospective of their careers last December at the Taft Theater, reuniting the first night with original members Ric Hordinski and Brian Kelley for a romp through the band's earliest music.

A live recording of that show, Live From Nowhere Vol. 4, is out now on two CDs; if you order via the band's web site you also get MP3s of the full set.

Over the Rhine currently is touring the country, with upcoming shows from L.A. and Seattle to Boston and Washington, D.C. They play one of their favorite spots, Moonlite Gardens at Coney Island, Friday evening. Tickets are $20.

See CityBeat's special section on OtR's 20th anniversary, featuring past articles and photos. Get details on the Moonlite Gardens show here.
