I’m not actually sure where Union Centre is, but I’m willing to find it this weekend for the annual Union Centre Boulevard Bash. And it’s not just because I like exploring Cincinnati’s pockets of suburban sprawl.
On Friday night, the Gin Blossoms headline the three-day food-and-music extravaganza. I was only in second grade when New Miserable Experience came out (the album that launched classic radio hits like “Hey Jealousy” and “Found Out About You”), but listening to it has always made me feel the same way that watching Reality Bites does: falsely nostalgic for a time when I wasn’t old enough to participate in the jaded flannel experience young adults were having in the early ‘90s that I so desperately wanted to be a part of.
I wasn’t old enough to understand Angela's worldview in My So Called Life, and I was never going to work in a record store like Empire Records. And I know the Gin Blossoms were probably never that cool to listen to, unlike Archers of Loaf or Dinosaur Jr. or something, but they were on the soundtracks to the movies and shows I wanted to live in.
So I’m going to West Chester to find this thing and I’m going to eat some exotic local cuisine, like Maggiano’s or Qdoba, and drink beer in a plastic cup. The event runs Friday-Sunday just west of I-75 on Union Centre Boulevard. Get festival details here.
