What’s new with comedian and Canton native John Rathbone? “Absolutely nothing has changed,” he states. “Except I ache more and I have less hair.” Actually, Rathbone does have some interesting news to report. “I just auditioned for Def Comedy Jam,” he says. “I headlined a show at a club and after my show they had an urban show. I asked to go on after that…and they thought I was crazy
. But I’ve played a lot of urban shows before and I did real well, so they asked me to come back and audition for Def Jam
.” To give you an idea of just how diverse his appeal is, two nights later he was performing essentially the same set for a church convention in Pittsburgh. Rathbone describes himself as a generalist. “I don’t stay away from topical things because of their short shelf life,” he explains, “but because you end up preaching to the choir. A lot of it is taking cheap shots at people I really don’t care about in the first place.” John Rathbone performs at The Funny Bone on the Levee, Thursday-Sunday. $10-$12.
