Mi-Hee Nahm, originally from South Korea, reconnects with her past through art. See selected drawings by Nahm in Young at Art at Phyllis Weston-Annie Bolling Gallery beginning Friday through Aug. 16. Here's what motivates this talented young artist. (Tamera Lenz Muente)

Moving to America. I came to America from South Korea when I was in high school. Living in a different country with a different language and culture was a big struggle for me, and it compelled me to make art.

Memories. All I can think of from the past serves as my inspiration: good memories, bad memories, memories of objects, memories that remain in my mind, manipulated memories, falsely forgotten memories, memories of friends and everything else.

Daydream. Daydreaming enables me to think about past events regardless of their significance. While I daydream, I often think about my old memories, which become the main source of my work.

The arts in general. Rembrandt's self-portraits; Vermeer's "Girl with a Pearl Earring"; Bouguereau's colors; contemporary artists Do-ho Suh, Sun-Young Kang and Steven Assael; Pansori (Korean traditional song) and Seungmu (Korean traditional dance); the late Jazz singer Carmen McRae; Korean musician Tai-ji Seo; Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater; and so many others.

Family: My family used to have nothing to do with art, but since I became serious about it they joined me. My mom and sister are always looking for things that will further my art, while my dad started calligraphy and shares his practice with me. Their support and love motivates and inspires me.
