Look Who's Eating: DAN VOGEL-ESSEX

Founder of Flying Food

If you see Dan Vogel-Essex riding his bike in Northside, give him some room -- he just might be bringing me my dinner. Vogel-Essex runs Flying Food, a Northside-based bicycle delivery service that delivers to Northside locations from Portofino's, Sidewinder Coffee, Madison Grocery, Melt, The Hideaway, The Comet and, curiously enough, Shake It Records. "The idea has been brewing for a few years," says Vogel-Essex, who delivered food on his bike in Clifton for Jimmy John's when he attended college. "I ride a bike everywhere I go," he says. "We just started up on Halloween Day." Vogel-Essex says he will add lunch hours to the 4 p.m.-10 p.m. hours currently offered. He also plans to add new restaurants and delivery to Clifton and Winton Woods locations. CityBeat recently caught up with him. (Chris Kemp)

CityBeat: What was the best last meal you had, and where was it?

Dan Vogel-Essex: Definitely some custom-made pasta at The Hideaway. I'm a big eater and I can't finish it. And it's in my price range. The thing I like to do is -- and they hate this -- I say, "Linguine, marinara sauce and whatever else you want."

CB: So, you run a bicycle delivery service: What happens when it snows?

DVE: We wear thick hats and gloves. I've been riding a bike everyday for 10 years in Cincinnati and I've never checked the weather. Winter on a bike is surprisingly feasible.

Flying Food delivers 4-10 p.m. Tuesday-Sunday. $2 per delivery. 513-591-FOOD.
