Rumors, Lies and General Misunderstandings

´ A benefit show for the Michael W. Bany Scholarship Fund -- an annual music scholarship named in the memory and spirit of the local musician -- goes down this Friday at the York Street Caf´ in Newport. The 8:30 p.m. show is hosted by Roger Yeardley and the Balance Allstars (currently prepping a CD release) and features performances by Mike Fair and the Adventure Seekers and The Moxie Band, plus special guests like Marcos Sastre, Charlie Fletcher, Keith Little and others.

´ A benefit to assist injured local bass player Chris Walker takes place at Molly Malone's in Covington this Friday. The "Friends for Chris Walker" show is also the CD release party for the new one by Blues/Rock band Conrail Saints, one of the many local groups to which Walker has lent his formidable skills (Walker plays on the CD). Buckra, Jon Justice Band, iolite, The Trojan Rabbit and Earle Grey also perform. (myspace.com/friendsforchriswalker)

´ There's another benefit at the Southgate House Friday, this one in honor of a young girl who recently passed away from an inoperable brain tumor called DIPG. The family of the 6-year-old girl, Elena Desserich, started "The Cure Starts Now" to help raise funds for experimental treatments and research in order to find a cure for the disease. Local groups performing at "Elenapalooza" Friday include Mack West, The Swarthy Band, Backseat Virtue, Chaselounge, Close to Home, Dead August, Another Tragedy, Comet Bluegrass Allstars, Bluf, patientZero, Reaper and Bastion. ´ Jazz/Funk/Fusion ensemble Souse is celebrating its new CD release, Push, with a 9 p.m. show at Poor Michael's Pub in Fairfield this Friday. The septet does arrangements of compositions by Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock and Billy Cobham, which gives a good sense of the style of the funky originals on the expertly produced and performed album (look for a review soon).
