Of Japanese ancestry and born and raised in Honolulu,
FRANK SATOGATA integrates elements of both Eastern and Western culture into his artistic identity. His paintings are on view through Nov. 30 at the Carnegie. The following five things motivate him. (Tamera Lenz Muente)
Zen calligraphy and Abstract Expressionism. Spontaneous brushstrokes and process are both an important and an essential part of my work. I am constantly refining my mark-making so it becomes more a part of my personal calligraphy.
Print and electronic media. Books have been a source of information on how artists have influenced the direction of art throughout history. The Internet has made a greater variety of art and ideas more accessible, as long as you weed out what's applicable from what's not.
My son playing sports. My son is an excellent soccer player, but he switched to football during his junior year in high school. He said he felt he wasn't learning anything new and therefore was not being challenged. His example taught me that in art, as in sports, if we're not learning and growing, we're not being the best that we can be.
Meditation and yoga. My practice keeps me focused during the painting process.
Relationships. People. My body to my mind. Myself to my wife. Myself to my son. Myself to my dog. My immediate family to my extended family. My race to your race. My country to your country. My species to your species.
