Matt Morris

Matt Morris
MATT MORRIS is one of Cincinnati's most promising young artists. His senior thesis work can be seen as part of the exhibition Welcome the Interruption, which is on view Monday through April 21 at the Art Academy of Cincinnati, and features his latest unification of large- and small-scale paintings, sculptural objects, video, sound, sewing and installation art. Check out five things that motivate Morris to create his next great work.

Google image search. A reservoir of our collective conscious, I can get instantly gratifying information from individuals, rather than institutions and can revel in the junk heap of pictures. 18th-century France. Watteau's paintings are premonitions about the inevitability of a society's pursuits of grander and grander spectacle. By the time of the French Revolution (the one with Marie Antoinette's beheading and the dethroning and execution of Louis XVI), they had overused the putto image, and realized such opulence that perhaps nothing since then has gone that far. This time period becomes a measuring rod to compare the then with the now. Target stores. A temple of accessible luxury, here I can see what is the new and affordable "beautiful." Target is home to pattern, color, psychology -- it takes a chance at presuming what we want. So often, it is bang on. Curatorial projects. Why take my word for it, when I can bring together diverse groups of artists and thinkers in addition to ideas to engage in complex dialogues for viewers more eloquently than any artist could do on their own? Few things are better than an excited, interested art public. Gourmet food. A couple of years ago I began a dedicated pursuit of new flavors and culinary experiences. I bring a lavish evening at Boca, the grand relaxation of JeanRo or a whirlwind safari of cuisine on a trip to New York back to the studio. The intensity of my experiences fuels my studio practice. This is life at its best, brief and temporary.
