The Affair-- Yes Yes To You

What is it about bands that start with "the" and end with one word? Something about that quality of a band name lends expectations for either a great album or a British Rock group that will sing sappy introspective laments. Not the case with Brooklyn's The Affair. Vocalist Kali Holloway has a Pat Benatar-like, pissed-off voice, which is unique and intriguing when she is singing about sappier subject matter. Their first single, "Honey," does not demonstrate the strength of the later songs on the album. Get past the basic Punk-wannabe sounds of the first few tracks and the rest of the album is quite enjoyable. Holloway's voice also takes some getting used to. The album takes off around track six ("Andy"). It has lyrics reminiscent of a '50s Doo Wop song, but filled out with an '80s synthesizer riff and a clap track. It should be their next single, and the video would bode well to have a '50s prom theme (pompadours and poodle skirts are imperative). "Jailbait Date" has lyrics that add more dimensions to Holloway's vocal persona. Curfews, hall passes and skipping class are what she wants in her young lover. Disturbing? No. Why? Because she's a bad-ass. This is a supreme effort showcasing how meshing sounds of multiple decades into one album wouldn't be possible without the efforts of the entire band. Each instrument stands out (again, especially with the catchy riffs), and when fronted by Holloway's harsh voice, the band has honed a sound that is fresh, despite the obvious influences.
