The Simpsons: The Complete Ninth Season (FOX)

The Simpsons: The Complete Ninth Season
1997-98, Not Rated By P.F. Wilson

Season nine of America's favorite cartoon family hits the ground running with "Homer vs. The City of New York" and never lets up. Other memorable episodes include "Bart Star," which finds Homer becoming Bart's football coach. Joe Namath and Mike Judge (King of the Hill, Office Space) are guest voices. Of course, there's another "Treehouse of Horror" (the eighth) and "Lisa the Simpson," where Lisa fears she might be losing her intelligence. Not to go all conspiracy theory, but it seems as if the early episodes, the ones on DVD, get yanked from syndication. A ploy to sell more DVDs? Maybe. The contrast in quality, though, is stark. Season nine still draws humor from the characters themselves, and just not wacky situations, thought they do find themsleves in plenty of those. Even the supporting characters like Apu and Krusty The Clown get fleshed-out a bit more with hilarious results. (P.F. Wilson) Grade: A
