Julie Francis opened Nectar in Mount Lookout after putting a lot of energy into a downtown restaurant, Aioli, whose quality outshone its marketability. Now, closer to a large audience who appreciates her commitment to seasonal food and less restrained by the lunch hour rush, she's enjoying her creative side again.
CityBeat: Where was the last wonderful meal you ate, and what was it? Julie Francis: I'm sorry to be repetitive, but a few years ago when CityBeat asked me a similar question, my answer was Stone Bowl Bibimbap at Riverside Korean Restaurant. And now it's the same. But my food was even better on this last visit -- more veggies.
CB: Don't apologize. Riverside was my last wonderful meal, too. So what trend in restaurant meals are you ready to say goodbye to? JF: Wine pairings. Not because they're bad -- they're wonderful! But they're very serious. They depend on a serious approach. I want to do something fun. I'm going to be building five-course meals around one ingredient. The first one will be mustard, and Gene Goldschmidt, the Horseradish King from Findlay Market, will be joining us.
