Positively Yeah Yeah Yeah: New Tunes

Tales of the Rat Fink

The Sadies have scored 26 instrumental tracks for the soundtrack to the new indie documentary film Tales of the Rat Fink, the life story of custom car icon Ed "Big Daddy" Roth. With song titles like "The Matador" and "The Borderline," the surf's up and the smell of rubber on asphalt is in the air, but it's too bad none of the dialogue from the film was included, as John Goodman, Jay Leno, Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top, Stone Cold Steve Austin, Robert Williams, Ann-Margaret and author Tom Wolfe's voices appear throughout the film. Look for the soundtrack Tuesday on the Yep Roc label. ... More brass-knuckled, full-throttled delights roar onto store shelves this Tuesday with Sundazed Records' release of Davie Allan & The Arrows' Cycle Breed, an 18-track collection of motorcycle hooligan music from the '60s teen-exploitation films The Glory Stompers , The Wild Angels and Devil's Angels. Five tracks appear on CD for the first time, including sessions recorded for the films The Angry Breed and Wild In the Streets. ... From his years in Shockabilly and Bongwater to producing some of the best Alternative albums of the '80s and '90s, some of Mark Kramer's most adventurous work bore the imprint of his eclectic record label, Shimmy-Disc. The label was recently born again as the new and improved Second Shimmy Records, with a cool tribute to Daniel Johnson as its inaugural relapse. Timed nicely with the release of The Devil and Daniel Johnson on DVD, I Killed the Monster has cover contributions from Sufjan Stevens, Kimya Dawson, Mike Watt, Jad Fair, Mad Francis, The Dick Panthers and more. Up next for Kramer is a tribute to the classic Brill Building "sound" on John Zorn's Tzadik label, with covers of songs by Neil Diamond, Doc Pomus, Carol King and Phil Ramone.
