Semantics Gallery

Chakaia Booker's "Untitled" is on view at the Carl Solway Gallery through July 29.

It's time to venture out: There's no better time than spring to make new discoveries, so highlight your map to the city with these destinations.

I want to head to SEMANTICS GALLERY (1107 Harrison Ave., Brighton) just to satisfy my curiosity about the title of their latest exhibition, furry-stitchy-twitchy-rust. Featuring the work of nine different artists, this show seeks to explore the often-muddied area between contemporary art and alternative crafts. It's a legitimate question for many artists, because the two media are considered opposites art is generally assumed to contain higher purpose, whereas crafts are considered free of the weight of carrying meaning. These artists, including Denise Burge, Serenity and Katie Swartz, intend to question and blur the boundaries between the fields with a variety of pieces in all degrees along the continuum. Form your own judgment when you visit the gallery through May 20. ...

If you missed Final Friday this month, you still have time to catch the work of Tom Mitts, a well-established Cincinnati artist. Well Seasoned, his latest exhibition hosted by the ENJOY THE ARTS GALLERY (1338 Main St., Over-the-Rhine), explores everyday subjects in Mitts' trademark style: authentic and honest. A skilled painter, he uses light to convey a range of emotions with his work, and combines it with elements of abstraction and distortion for a distinctive take on traditional oil painting. Mitts has won numerous local and national awards for his landscapes, and for good reason: they are truly breathtaking in skill and scenery. Don't miss them. Through May 19. ...

CARL SOLWAY GALLERY (424 Findlay St., West End) celebrates all things twisted -- as in sculpture. The gallery opens two marquee sculpture exhibitions that will show through late June when the conference of the International Sculpture Center descends on Cincinnati (June 21-24). A Tribute to Nam June Paik features five major video works from the artist internationally known as the "father of video art," as well as his drawings and prints. The gallery will also exhibit its personal collection of Paik's letters, sketches and photographs acquired during its long-standing association with him. Paik is internationally recognized as the influencer of a generation of artists who use video as a medium. In collaboration, the gallery also features 3D: An Exhibition of Contemporary Sculpture, which includes pieces by 31 artists recognized nationally and internationally for their innovative sculpture, including Cincinnatians JAY BOLOTIN, ANTHONY LUENSMAN and CARMEL BUCKLEY. Sculpture in this exhibition encompasses a variety of techniques and materials, so pay attention -- every piece is bound to be startlingly distinctive. Don't miss this chance to view some truly renowned sculpture. Opening reception: 5-8 p.m. Friday. Through July 29. ...

If you find some art to be a bit inaccessible, give artist RICHARD EYMAN a try. He's taken art and combined it with Rock music to present his thesis exhibition at SOUTHGATE HOUSE GALLERY (24 E. 3rd St., Newport). The Life and Death of a Rock Star consists of an actual constructed Rock star from the Glam-Rock era, memorabilia and fan art. And Eyman has chosen the perfect venue to complement his pieces: What better place than the Southgate House, the Mecca of the local Rock scene? This sounds like a don't-miss. Opening reception: 7 p.m. May 12. Through May 25.
