The Split

Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson

Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) spends most of the smash hit Spiderman 2 convincing himself that he can't be with the girl of his dreams, Mary Jane "MJ" Watson (Kirsten Dunst). His double-life as Spider-Man is too dangerous to involve anyone else.

When he rescues MJ from the clutches of villain Doc Ock (Alfred Molina) and reveals his true identity as Peter Parker, it seems certain they'll kiss. Instead, we're treated to the best break-up scene of 2004. Maguire delivers the line, "You and I can never be," resigned to watch the woman he loves marry an astronaut and walk out of his life.

Spider-Man spins the web that delivers a tearful MJ into the waiting arms of her fiancé, certain that this is their final goodbye. Thank goodness for twist endings. (Jessica C. Adams)
