Shake It: Basically Dance

Sneak preview to kick off the Tristate's upcoming dance season

Dance organizations of Cincinnati unite! Cincinnati Ballet and Cincinnati Arts Association (CAA) have collaborated for the second consecutive year to host a broad sneak preview to kick off the Tristate's upcoming dance season. Their timing works nicely, too -- EVERYTHING THAT MOVES meshes with the Enjoy the Arts 20/20 Festival. The diverse performance sampler lineup is chock-full of talent from prominent area dance schools and companies. Hosted at the Otto M. Budig Academy of the Cincinnati Ballet on Central Parkway, Tuesday's free event (5-8 p.m.) also serves as a casual forum for class information from all participating dance organizations. Whether you're aspiring or experienced -- or perhaps needing a nudge of encouragement -- this is certainly worth checking out. There will be plenty of dance styles from which to choose your lessons. Obvious participants include Cincinnati Ballet, Contemporary Dance Theater, ballet tech ohio and the School for Creative and Performing Arts. Don't miss the pair of celebrated young dancers from Cuba, CERVILIO AMADOR and ADIARYS ALMEIDA, who joined the Cincinnati Ballet this year. As a likely highlight of the event, they will be performing the famous wedding pas de deux from Don Quixote. The ballroom dance community will be well-represented, too. Covington's independent Step-N-Out Dance Studio, where a plethora of partner dances are taught, will be featured along with the local franchise of the ubiquitous Arthur Murray Dance Studios. A somewhat lesser-known local treasure, The Flying Cloud Academy of Vintage Dance, represents an important regional and national force in the preservation, performance and teaching of historic ballroom dances. Rounding out the eclectic lineup with fusion styles are performances by the multicultural Gaiananda Music and Dance Ensemble and a breakout appearance by Cincinnati's newly formed contemporary dance group, Moving Art Dance Company. In addition to enjoying complimentary appetizers and beverages, attendees can peruse ballet costumes on display in the lobby. Ever wonder how many yards of tulle it takes to construct a tutu? No doubt someone will be on hand with the answer. Info: 513-621-5219.
