Carl Shapiro, DO, sees himself more as an educator than an interventionalist. He's an osteopathic physician, a fully licensed medical doctor who's board-certified in internal medicine, physical medicine and rehabilitation and pain medicine. He's also trained in neurology, with an emphasis on disorders of the spine and peripheral nervous system.
Shapiro's clinical practice is concerned with disorders of the spine and musculoskeletal system. His practice addresses pain syndromes associated with trauma or accident such as degenerative disk disease, disk herniation or myofascial pain associated with whiplash and fibromyalgia.
In addition to the usual pharmacologic interventions, injection techniques, physical therapy exercises and modalities prescribed by most medical practices, Shapiro often uses manual medicine techniques such as muscle energy, myofascial release and craniosacral therapy in order to address range of motion difficulties and deep muscle tenderness. He views this as part of a comprehensive holistic approach to patient care, recognizing the mind/body/emotion connection that perpetuates musculoskeletal illness and dysfunction.
With this kind of approach, the physician guides the patient to experience the sensation of chronically sore and tight connective tissues "unwinding" or releasing strain. Factors causing and propagating pain are also investigated in order to help patients maintain a balance point of greatest mobility and fundamental wellness. Early referral for additional expert services such as physical therapy, counseling, hypnotherapy and massage are often made so that patients develop better lifestyle choices and habits promoting wellness.
Shapiro practices at the Mayfield Spine Institute, 2123 Auburn Ave., Mount Auburn. More info is available at 513-569-5336.
